For backpackers and hikers, the need of a light backpack with enough space cannot be emphasized enough. Kuiu have come up with a solution now with their Ultra and Icon lightweight backpacking system that can carry up to 70kg. The key lies in the spread tow carbon fiber frame that is actually stronger than steel. It weighs only 298g and supports the two backpacks.
The frame is the base of a customizable system which offer different-sized packs for a single or multi-day use. Each pack is made of 500D Cordura rip-stop fabric which is water proof and very durable. Kuiu have also improved on the comfort of the backpack system by using a suspension system that distributes weight more evenly via a hip belt. The pack also comes in touch with only the shoulders, making air circulation better and going easy on the lower back. Every pack also has a built in T-lock track system that lets you make adjustments based on the length of your torso.
The Ultra line starts with a volume of 1,800 cubic inches (29.5 liters) and a weight of 4 lb 1 oz (1.8 kg) and goes up to 6,000 cubic inches (98 liters), which weighs in at 3 lb 12.7 oz (1.7 kg). The Icon line starts at 1,850 cubic inches (30 liters) and goes up to 7,200 cubic inches (118 liters) and tops out at a svelte 5 lb 12 oz (2.7 kg). There are other backpacks in the market with similar characteristics but none can match Kuiu’s weight carrying capacity or different bag sizes.
Kuiu have developed this backpack system by working in collaboration with Rocket Composites which create carbon fiber products for spaceships and modern super-cars. The prices of this system will start at $349.99 for the full Ultra 1800 kit. Here is a demonstrative video that will explain the perks of this backpack:
