Lean…..Mean….Fighting Machine (read fighting CAR).  That’s what the new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is.  It’s much more sleeker that its predecessor.  Redesigned to be leaner, lighter, with a host of new engines to bring the fight to its arch-rival: The Ford Mustang, the Camaro was revealed on Saturday before a crowd of enthusiastic Camaro fans on Belle Isle in Detroit.

This is the sixth generation of this legendary sports car and its aim is to be the best combination of style and capability, acceleration and fuel economy.  “Redesigning the Camaro is thrilling and challenging all at once, but the secret is to offer something more,” Mark Reuss, General Motors executive vice president of product development, said in a statement.

The major change in the new Camaro is its weight.  The car has shed more than 200 pounds.  Engineers cut off weight nearly everywhere, using aluminum for the instrumental panel frame and some suspension components to trim as much fat as possible.  The rear wheel drive platform is lighter and stiffer which will lead to better handling.  The new Camaro is about two inches shorter in length, due to its compact wheelbase.

Eventhough the Camaro will be lighter, it’s still going to pack a very heavy punch.  The Camaro SS tops the range with the Corvette’s 6.2 liter V8 pushing out 455 horsepower and 455 pound feet of torque.  Known as the LT1, it has a cast aluminium bloddk and cast aluminm cylinder heads, and it’s fortified with direct injection, variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation.  The Camaro also gets a four-cylinder engine that promised to maintain performance and offer improved fuel economy.  Chevy says it will hit 60 miles in less than six seconds and return more than 30 miles per gallon on the highway.  It’s expected to be the most fuel-efficient Camaro ever.

As for the exterior appearance, the front get a grill/head lamp aperture, which Chevy says is reminiscent of the first generation Camaro.  The roofline in the rear has a more dramatic, fastback appearance, and the SS variant gets a spoiler.  The roof panel is lighter and more rigid.  Inside the cabin, the Camaro gets a new instrument panel.  It blends analogue elements with an eight-inch center screen that shows performance, entertainment, and navigation information.  Designers also integrated the heating cooling controls into the vents, and dressed things up with an LED ambient lighting system.  Drivers can tailor the shifting, steering, and chassis settings via a new driver mode selector, which is mounted in the center console.

“The driving experience is significantly different,” Aaron Link, lead development engineer said in a statement.  “Immediately, you will notice how much lighter and more nimble the Camaro feels.  That feeling increases when you drive the Camaro harder – it brakes more powerfully, dives into corners quicker, and accelerates faster than ever.”
