Mowing the lawn probably tops the list as one of those chores that no one wants to do, at least not any longer than they have to. That is why Honda presents Mean Mower.
This machine has been labeled as the world’s fastest lawn mower and has managed to break the Guinness World Record for it. This mower was tested in Spain at the IDIADA Proving Ground, in Tarragona. Piers Ward from BBC’s Top Gear Magazine took it for a test drive, being required to complete two runs within an hour’s time along a speed trap of 100 m (328 ft), in both directions.
Ward managed to have an average speed during his test drive in both directions, to be 187.60 kph (116.57 mph). But, the mower’s top speed was calculated to be 209 kph (130 mph) last year, according to Gizmag. Ward’s speed, however, did break his own previously set record of 140 kph (87 mph). A mower contending for the title needs to meet two criteria. It has to have the fastest average speed besides being able to cut grass and, essentially looking like a lawnmower. The Honda Mean Mower met all of these criteria.
The design and manufacturing of the Mean Mower is inspired by Honda Lawn Tractor HF2620. The design and manufacturing of the mean mower however, was carried out in the UK by Team Dynamics of Honda’s British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) partner. A newer and better version of the mower was introduced soon after with a 4130 chromoly (high carbon steel) chassis that was added to provide a tough, yet light I weight, platform for the body, and a 1,000-cc engine from a Honda VTR Firestorm was installed to power the beast. To add stability and grip to the machine, wheels from ATV and bespoke suspension were used in it.
Fiberglass was used for the cutter deck while the fuel tank was contained in a grass bag to keep the machine weight as less as possible. It also features a secondary hydro cooling radiator and high capacity oil cooler. Custom-made Cobra sports seats, a steering set taken from a Morris Minor, Scorpion exhaust system are the features that make it the coolest lawn mower ever. Oh, and did someone mention its custom-made paddle shift six-speed gear system? The same gear system that was included following the advice of Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden, the champions of British Touring Car.
Honda Motor Europe’s manager for PR communications in Europe, Kate Saxton told the press, “The original brief for Mean Mower was to create the world’s fastest lawnmower – and now it officially is, by some distance!” She further said, “We are all delighted to hold a Guinness World Records title and we’d like to thank everyone who was involved in what has been a challenging yet incredibly exciting project.”
