The reason, as most would tell you, is that you ate food which was expired or not fit for eating. Even among food there are types that are more harmful when expired such as meat. If you’ve got a packet of meat with a best before date that has passed then sniffing it can give you a general idea if it’s safe to eat or not. But how do you make sure that you’re playing it safe?
This is where the star of this article comes in; Peres is a new gadget which is currently in the fundraising zone at Indiegogo and is about a month away from its fund campaign completion. Essentially it is a sniffer which is handheld and is capable of sampling the air around the meat in question. It measures the levels of volatile organic compounds and ammonia which is present around the meat along with the temperature and humidity. This data is then sent to the smartphone app via Bluetooth and after analyzing the information the app will tell the user if the food is fresh, can be eaten right away or should be thrown in the dust bin. The app also allows for the results to be shared on social media.
This amazing gadget has been developed by researchers at Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania. Peres is capable of measuring the safety of poultry, fish, pork and beef. However, despite the limited types of food that it can analyze the Peres is capable of working as a third party application which means that it can be used on any kind of these foods, you don’t need to look for a specific brand to analyze them. This implies that you can take it to the market near your house and analyze the food before you buy it.
