Every star wars fan, is amazed by the high-stakes pod races, featured in Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, and will know how much can watching such a spectacle means. A group of drone pilots have performed the task marvelously.
This event was first of its type and was held by Airgonay drone club. After its success, the president of the club Herve Pellarin hopes to inspire like-minded drone fanatics around the globe to start working on such drones.
Through the 150m course, twenty four participants raced. In the competition, quadcopters and multicopters were customized to obtain the perfect balance between speed and dexterity. Going through the obstacles like trees, rival drones, branches and sharp contrasts in lighting, the racers had to use their skill to get through the forest at speeds as high as 50km/h.
The competition was held for groups of four contestants each. The pilots used goggles to obtain feed from the cameras fitted at the face of the drones. The race was based on three laps through the forest. Which was a big challenge according to the president Pellarin, as going through the forest at such high speeds was a big achievement.
According to Pellarin; the club will look to expand by the next year and try attracting international drone pilots and broadcasting the action live from the race.
