The New look for the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Revealed

It was announced a while back that Michael Bay (Transformer Series), was producing the film based on a new iteration of the beloved ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ . The director of the movie is Jonathan Liebesman (Battle Los Angeles) and Megan Fox was cast as reporter April O’Neil. This is all we have known for quite some time now.

Now new details are emerging, CBM (Click through for more Pictures) has posted a series of images that might indicate how the rebooted Ninja Turtles might look; they are pictures supposedly taken by a source close to the production, depicting the new Ninja Turtles in maquette (figurine model) form:

This comes with some respite for fans, who have been dealt one blow after the other. First it was the story that origin story will be changed. To refresh your memory, here’s the Bay comment about Ninja Turtles that started it all:

“When you see this movie, kids will believe one day that these turtles do exist, when we’re done with this movie. These turtles [in the reboot] are from an alien race, and they’re going to be tough, edgy, funny, and completely lovable.”

But the backlash was so severe from the fans, that after almost a year Micheal Bay had to say this (In a non-apologetic manner):

“There was that quote saying that we’re making [the Ninja Turtles as] aliens. We’re not. It’s the ooze! It’s from the original source material. These are from the original writers, and I never went out to correct myself in the press. I do listen to the fans and I do want this to be authentic. I think they’re going to be really happy with this movie. When I see the digital stuff, the turtles look great.”

The negative fan reaction also appeared to have influenced Paramount’s decision to delay the film’s release and hire screenwriter Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) to revise the script.

Another bit of news about the looks of the Turtle was the toy descriptions three weeks ago.

  • Leonardo: a sort of pseudo samurai gear get up including shoulder armor, some leg bits, arm bracer and foot wear up to the calf with bindings showing… Armor (non metal) along his chest as well.
  • Donatello: a mix of techie, modern and a dash of samurai…with some gadget on his head and gadgetry coming off of his shell.
  • Raphael: an urban warrior look with white, bandage-like wrappings on his feet, right leg, and right arm. He wears this very Conan-esque loin cloth..thing..with leather straps draping down as if he were more suited for gladiatorial battle.
  • Michelangelo: a hoodie wrapped around his waist, pants and sneakers with the toes cut out, wrappings on his hands and forearms, a necklace…and his mask ends drape down to his chest.

Also now there is a single picture of Shredder, whose toy description was the most worrisome. Described as “Pointy edges coming off of absolutely anything. He’ll be the stuff of ridicule for some time. Very overcomplicated outfit.” There was concern that he would be done to the point of overkill. But the new picture should clam down some nerves as the new Shredder, looks awesome.

Now we have to wait and see how this all looks on the big screen. Hopefully we will get a good idea when the new trailer hits. Until then we have to hope that they don’t mess with the Turtles much.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will open in theaters on August 8th, 2014.
